The Surrey Schools’ Book of the Year Award Program is one of the student reader's choice programs sponsored by the Surrey School District in Surrey, British Columbia.
Program Overview: A fixture in the Surrey school library landscape for over 50 years, Surrey Schools’ Book of the Year is a reading program geared at elementary school students in the intermediate grades. The shortlisted 10 fiction titles, selected by a committee of Teacher-Librarians represent a variety of styles and are at varying levels of reading ability. Students are encouraged to read individually or have read to them as many titles as possible, prior to voting for their favourite title each May.
Program Goals: The central goals of the program are to promote a love of reading for enjoyment and information, and to develop student appreciation for a diverse range of writing styles and literary genres.
Selection Criteria: Ten books are selected each year. To be nominated for the SSBOY award, a book must demonstrate: - appeal to a wide range of learners; - a strong theme which generates discussion and extension activities; - a treatment of cultural and other values which is respectful and inclusive; - a treatment of content which is thoughtful and promotes student engagement. Every reasonable effort will be made to select texts published within three years of the program year.
Selection Committee: Committee members, including the Chair, are practicing Surrey Teacher-Librarians, who indicate interest in working on the program.
Program Delivery: Teacher-Librarians may choose to share all of the books with classes in the library, encouraging students to evaluate the suggested titles and to identify preferences. To be eligible to vote, a student must read or listen to a reasonable number of the nominated books. Teacher-Librarians are encouraged to use their discretion about student eligibility to vote. In late Spring, students will cast votes for the books that they have most enjoyed. Votes will be tallied by a committee member and the book which receives the most student votes will be officially designated Surrey Schools’ Book of the Year.
